Blanka Deroko is a design researcher, multimedia artist and educator exploring the liminal space between humans and technology.
Dr. Deroko is the Assistant Chair of Science and Professor at ArtCenter Humanities and Sciences Department. She received her PhD in Technoetics and Interactive Media from the School of Art, Design and Architecture at University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. She was a recipient of Fellowship in the Graduate School at the Department of Art Theory and Practice at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where she received her Master of Fine Arts in Media Art Theory and Practice.
With senior executive experience in leadership, she creates media strategies, pioneering new products, services and technologies through hands-on design and management. She has authored and oversaw the production of original information technology and media content for film and television, clients included CBS, MTV, VH1, Travel Channel, Lifetime TV, Oxygen, Mercedes, and Mattel. She has served on the peer review committee for the category of art papers for SIGGRAPH 2019 and 2017 and was a researcher at Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts at Plymouth University, UK between 2011 and 2021.
As a storyteller, experience architect, and artist she creates environments on the intersection of human and technology to transform and empower people. In her art and research, Blanka uses a combination of media technologies, neuroscience, and liminal aesthetics to create flow states. She creates art pieces offering critical perspective on media and creative technologies, explores identity in a technologically mediated world while proposing hybrid subjectivities as a way to bridge the fragmentation of human experience.
Blanka is a public speaker and published researcher in areas spanning digital media, human computer interaction, art and science, and designing for space and extreme environments. She has written for various publications including Technoetic Arts: A Journal of Speculative Research and Journal of Space Philosophy. Dr. Deroko has appeared on WNPR discussing design and liminality. She has spoken, delivered workshops and exhibited artworks in various institutions around the world including Geneva University of Art and Design, La Sorbonne, Paris, Universite Paris 8, Vincennes-San-Denis, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, University of Rio de Janeiro, Keio University in Tokyo, University of Zagreb, The German University in Cairo, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano, CalArts, CA and UCLA.
